The PADI Advanced Open Water diving course allows you, once you have acquired the basic techniques in the PADI Open Water diving course, to concentrate on your centers of interest and personalize your training, all while gaining experience and improving your diving skills. The purpose is to learn diving by diving.

The Advanced Open Water diving course requires the carrying out of five special purpose dives among the specialties listed above. In order to obtain an Advanced Open Water certificate, you are required to take a deep dive and a navigation dive; you choose the other three special purposes. Here also, the course is modular if you do not desire to take deep dives or navigational dives or you do not have enough time to complete the five required dives. Therefore, an intermediate certificate exists which allows you, upon completion of only three dives, to obtain the PADI Adventure Diver certificate.
Once you are certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, you may dive anywhere in the world, accompanied by a buddy down to a depth of 30 meters. This certificate also allows you to continue your training toward the PADI Rescue Diver and lead you towards other Specialties. Moreover, each dive accomplished during the course provides one credit, under certain conditions, toward taking a course in the corresponding specialty. Reciprocally, the first dive of a specialty course may count for a special interest dive in the Advanced Open Water diving course.
